Look up a domain or IP address

The responsible registry is queried – via RDAP where available, otherwise via classic WHOIS. Subdomains are automatically shortened to the registered domain.

Guide

How it works

  1. Enter a domain

Enter a domain, e.g. example.com – subdomains such as shop.example.com are automatically shortened to the registered domain. An email address or a full URL works as well.

  2. Read the result

At the top you see whether the domain is registered or available. Below: registrar, registration and expiry date, name servers and DNSSEC – as far as the registry publishes them.

  3. Understand the status

Codes such as “clientTransferProhibited” are translated and explained. A transfer lock is good, whereas a “hold” status means that the domain is suspended.

  4. IP addresses

For an IP address, the tool shows the network, the operator, the country and the abuse contact – that is where you report spam or attacks originating from this address.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see a registrant?

Since the GDPR (2018), almost all registries no longer publish data of private individuals and often not of companies either. If you have a legitimate interest, such as an infringement, you can contact the registrar or the registry.

What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

RDAP is the modern successor of WHOIS: the data comes in a structured form via HTTPS instead of free text. The tool uses RDAP wherever the registry offers it, otherwise classic WHOIS.

Why is there no expiry date for .de domains?

DENIC does not publish it: .de domains remain active as long as the contract with your provider exists and are usually renewed automatically.

Is an unregistered domain definitely available?

Usually yes. However, reserved or blocked names, premium domains and domains shortly after deletion may behave differently. Only the order with a provider is binding.

What does the transfer lock mean?

“clientTransferProhibited” prevents the domain from moving to another provider without your involvement. For an intended transfer, you remove it at your provider and request the auth code.

Which extensions are supported?

All for which IANA knows an RDAP or WHOIS service – including .com, .net, .org, .de, .at, .ch, .eu, .io, .co.uk and most new extensions. Some registries limit or refuse automated queries.
